The LHR Experience produces a pool of regionally oriented leaders. Leaders to effect the changes necessary for transition into the 21st century global community.

Our strategy is to challenge, motivate and support creative thinkers by providing broad exposure to the crucial issues and opportunities facing Hampton Roads.

Lead Hampton Roads provides hands-on experience in dynamic leadership skills and personal involvement with many facets of our region.

5 Practices of Exemplary Leadership

5 Practices of Exemplary Leadership

The LHR method stimulates creative problem solving that crosses traditional geographic and institutional boundaries. You’ll begin your studies with a two-day retreat focusing on effective leadership practices and group dynamics. Monthly field work and enrichment sessions follow, extending opportunities to perfect your leadership skills, experience the community at work behind the scenes and explore, with the region’s stakeholders and power brokers, innovative solutions to pressing issues.

Our interdisciplinary curriculum delves into the fundamental systems of metropolitan life. You will explore processes such as government and the judicial system, humanitarian concerns and economic progress, education and workforce development, the arts, diversity, the military and more. You will see the importance of educated leadership. You’ll recognize venues ideal for your unique approach and interests.

LHR sets the stage for positive change, and our graduates achieve it. LHR alumni are actively involved with more than 400 organizations impacting everyday life. And the LHR Alumni Association, the vehicle for continuing your networks beyond graduation day, ensures that have both support and resources readily available.

You are the ideal candidate if you exemplify progressive change. Every member of every class is chosen for demonstrated regional awareness and involvement, demonstrated leadership talent, and demonstrated reasoning and problem-solving abilities. Every class is balanced to reflect a broad spectrum of interests, occupations, and ethnic and cultural backgrounds. You will graduate with a deep appreciation of the scope, diversity, and promise of Hampton Roads.

Created by the Hampton Roads Chamber in 1989 to identify and prepare citizens for responsible public decision making and volunteer service, LHR is one of more than 450 leadership programs evolving across the nation. Our graduates – nearly 400 of them – work and volunteer in our community and around the country. LHR alumni include company presidents and chief executive officers, community organization chairs local and state elected officials, and those well on their way up the corporate and community ladders.

The impact of Leadership Hampton Roads is demonstrated daily by the activities and involvement of its alumni. Our graduates agree that their shared experiences in LHR have significantly both their involvement in the community and their effectiveness in the workplace.
